Good news to all Aquino supporters! Noynoy Aquino has recently guaranteed that he will continue his mother’s legacy, a legacy of incompetence and mediocrity. How do I know this for sure? Well, we hardly hear Noynoy talk in public about his policies or platform because he doesn’t see any point in discussing them. Yet he has expressed his fears about the possible failure of elections this coming May. He was adamant in his aspiration to be first on the streets to organise another people power revolution if it happens. Wow! Noynoy went straight to a Plan B and skipped coming up with a Plan A altogether.
Has Noynoy stooped to engaging in fear mongering or what?! The worse thing is, a lot of journalists are hopping onto the bandwagon and adding fuel to rumours of factions in the military. Why is everyone scared of failure of elections to begin with? To be fair, it is the first time that automated elections will be conducted in the country but then Commissions on Elections (Comelec) Chair Jose Melo dismissed fears as “pure fantasy”.
To quote the guy courtesy of the Inquirer.net:
“This talk on the failure of election is pure fantasy. It could happen in the localities but not nationwide,” Melo said. He added he did not expect these problems to affect the outcome of the contests for president or vice president.
Melo said that those apprehensive of the balloting were not open to full automation of the electoral process.
“Some of our candidates still prefer the manual counting of votes because they know that they can cheat. Whereas under the fully automated elections, they don’t have any idea how to cheat,” Melo said.
Mr Melo further added that small hiccups in some precincts could happen or, in the event of natural calamities, the automation might not work in some towns that are affected but it is unlikely that failure could happen at a nationwide scale. Even Election commissioner Rene Sarmiento dismissed doomsday scenarios.
There is also that scenario where the military is portrayed as itching to take over. For me, this is just another conspiracy theory. Ramon Capsiple who is a member of the Comelec Advisory Council says that the “alternative scenarios stemmed from fears that President Gloria Arroyo wants to stay in power.”
C’mon Noynoy, please take the words of the people who work for the Comelec as it is and don’t read between the lines. If you find them hard to believe, don’t make statements that are obviously just shots in the dark. You see, this is why I don’t bother God so much. I know he is busy so, If there is something I can do before I even elevate something to Him, I will try and do it myself first, after all, they say “God helps those who help themselves.”
So Noy, if you fear for a failure of elections, be more proactive and don’t do what your late mother used to do all the time. The last thing we need is another “prayerful” president. You can take all the necessary precautions to avoid a “failure”. You have so many days left to ring up every precinct to find out for yourself if they are ready or not. If you can’t do the ringing around yourself, you have legions of volunteers who can do it for you and give you a report. Don’t try to guess what’s going on and what the likely outcome will be. Go out there and get facts.
As per the Comelec, a failure of elections can only be declared if the voters are not able to cast their votes due to force majeure — earthquakes and tsunami, terrorism and violence are a few examples. Again, I wonder what measures Noynoy could propose in the event that such things happen? If I were him, I would take some initiative to find out what type of security measures will be in place in hot zones like Mindanao, and suggest some ways to beef them up where needed. Indeed there are many risks that could be mitigated. Power failures are something that Filipinos are used to, generators for high-risk precincts would be nice. In case there aren’t enough generators, the Comelec has assured also that the ballots can be counted manually anyway. Rather than be part of the problem by heckling and imagining conspiracies, Noynoy, why not suggest solutions?
Failure makes those who survive it strong, Noynoy. Your personal development goal should be to learn how to embrace risk rather than fear it. Consider this a first test on how President Noynoy would handle crises. If you are certain that the election will fail, then step up starting now and propose a system that is resilient enough to withstand it. As president, the Comelec — an agency of the government — will be part of your responsibility someday. Why not show us now how you plan to manage it?
If Noynoy Aquino, who is currently very vocal about his fear of an election failure does not proactively do anything to alleviate his fear, then he comes across to me as merely someone who is (a) trying to find a good scapegoat in case he loses the election (b) just plain vanilla incompetent or, worse, (c) just another conspiracy theorist!

And if he really wants to unite the country, he should avoid any further hullabaloo. The last thing we need is another sitting president who is accused of cheating the election results.

I’m sure this Conrado de Quiros guy already has that rockstar syndrome. Who could blame him when every thing he says is like Gospel to most Filipinos especially Noynoy himself and his supporters.
It’s so disappointing to know that so many supposedly educated Filipinos are such suckers for unfounded views. They are so beholden with his credentials as an esteemed journalist and fail to check his logic sometimes.

If not rockstar syndrone, it’s streetside doomsayer syndrome… like those guys wearing placards saying “repent, the world will end today…” he “prophesies” that Noynoy will lose to cheating, so he wants people to “repent” and turn to Noynoy. So he comes out as a sort of quack or weirdo like the placard wearer, with his “prophecy” that Noynoy will automatically win the election. What a reality twister. hehe.

It’s so weird how he talks to reporters as if he actually knows what he is talking about. All his talk of failure of elections without even gathering information to back it up is just silly to me.
Noynoy supporters should realise that it is not enough that they think he is a “nice” guy. He is just not equipped to handle a crisis. Unfortunately, almost every aspect of the country is in crisis.

You’d be surprised at how many Filipinos still believe in People Power. I think that the moment Noynoy organises one, they will all come out and support him. A lot of Filipinos are quite nostalgic and simply prefer gathering around like a herd unmindful that they are being led to the slaughterhouse. Thank goodness you and I won’t be one of them

@ UP n grad, these are the kinds of dangerous ideas put out there to serve as the seeds of unrest to be incited by those who feel that they are entitled to win the coming elections.
Ocho-ocho revolution 2010? Perhaps we have become too comfy with the notion that Pinoys have grown tired of moronisms like that. Well, that’s to be expected in a society with a world-renowned and extensive track record of zero-learning.

That’s a very clever diagram showing the truth. Filipinos have been blinded by this so called Aquino “legacy” for so long. I’m so glad a lot of people are finally seeing the light.
What was the result of their influence after all these years? Their legacy hasn’t done anything but keep the landlords (which includes their family) happy and the rest of society with the short end of the stick.

Of course someone who supports Noynoy will say that it is Villar who is avoiding a debate. MLQ3 was suggesting that there’s just too many invites for a debate that’s why it’s impossible to say yes to all of them but how many has Noynoy gone to anyway? And what’s keeping him busy that he cannot go to them? He’s just resting on his laurels now because the “surveys” keep telling him that he is going to win the election.

He’s actually correct to suggest that electronic voting machines can be rigged. This has been proven in America in a court of law. Just go to youtube and search diebold voting machines. You’ll see tons of information on this. Electronic voting machines are just a way to give you the illusion you have a choice in the matter. The whole election process is rigged and your vote doesn’t count. Welcome to the NWO.

Then he or any LP member should come forth and present proof or a demonstration about the cheating methods with machines. Even those Youtube videos you refer to are themselves made by pundits or amateurs with no real authoritativeness on the issue. Without proof that it’s rigged, then there’s nothing to pursue. Conspiracy theory as usual. Also, even if the elections were rigged, what will he want, street marching again? That is so outdated. Enough already. “People Power” done these days is also called “stupidity power.”
If cheating worries you so much, then here’s a better solution: change the election process! Let the leader NOT be nationally elected anymore! Let the people vote a local representative, then let these representatives vote the top leader. Now if the representatives themselves don’t cheat, how can you cheat in that?

Of course anything can be rigged. In fact, I don’t need to watch that Youtube video to believe you. Filipinos are particularly talented at rigging. The thing is though, it’s not easy. Obviously, there’s a lot of manipulation involved and if everyone is vigilant enough, we can avoid it. The problem is, Filipinos don’t trust each other and Noynoy is number one in saying that he doesn’t trust anybody nor does he trust the new system.
That’s why we are suggesting to him to be more proactive. Why doesn’t he suggest that each polling station be assigned with a volunteer from each candidate? Any kind of suggestion from him will be great! Reklamo lang ng reklamo eh.
Wala ng mag-yayari satin nyan kung lagi na lang walang tiwala. Noynoy should lead by example and start showing more confidence that “Yes the Filipino can do it!”
I knew it. Noynoy is such a negative person. He just has this overall negative attitude and he is not even the president yet.
What is your suggestion then? Do you want us to cancel the election or go back to manual para mas madali mag-cheat?
Chino has a point too. If Filipinos simply cannot be trusted not to cheat, we should change the election process entirely!

Better look at the comments that followed the video posting. This report is criticized because it does deserve criticism. This TV demonstration was itself rigged – to show that the machine is cheating on this show. So from this, you think that every Diebold machine will be rigged? That’s the problem with some TV presentations. You think it happens in real life, when it fact it was contrived for that TV spot. And also, how do you get the virus into the machine itself? Will they be connected to the Internet? Isn’t it just the card? This video isn’t enough for me.
Diebold makes ATM machines too. Hope you’re not suspecting those of fraud.

Ok, so you’re saying don’t invest in the technology? That’s kinda like telling people not to cross streets anymore lest they be run over by a car.
I don’t think anybody’s saying here that any sort of technology to automate any part of the election process is fool-proof. Pretty much anything — even the most secure systems — can be broken into and rigged. The point here is more about the attitude Pinoys take to most things whether they are old or new ways of doing things. Either way Pinoys prefer to undermine rather than work with whatever systems they put in place.
Trouble with some people is that their small minds limit them to a small take on the issue. And that is where the small solutions of the sort that have become the favourite of Da Pinoy come from.
