Soap Operas and Fascination with Noynoy
What I have observed in Philippine soap operas is that the plot, characters, and the endings are the same. If I’m not mistaken, the classic soap opera goes like this:
Boy is rich (for some unknown reason because they wouldn’t discuss how he had gotten there) and he meets this poor girl who is either his childhood friend or their maid. Then almost automatically, they fall in love and everything is wonderful until the boy reveals it to his parents. The boy’s parents harass the girl but the boy fights for her and they live happily ever after.
How sweet.
Some people justify their watching of telenovelas by saying that it makes them forget their problems during the night. They are not fully aware that the things that happen in soap operas are not real.
I am actually furious about the common character of the leading lady in telenovelas because she’s such a pushover. The leading lady always has good values and is good not only to most people but also to the people that put her down. That doesn’t happen in real life. No offense to people in the poorer classes of society but you people, especially women, have got to stop believing that your lives will drastically change not because you worked for it but because one day, your knight in shining armor (who is also filthy rich) would come to rescue you from poverty.
The result of all these hallucinations and carnival-like fantasies is people not working hard enough to uplift themselves from their miseries. When I was 10, we had a tenant who was a mistress and she would often tell me that I should marry a rich guy. At that young age, I was horrified with her idea because not only do I not want to use people for my personal interests but I knew that if i were to succeed in life, I wouldn’t marry for the sake of getting rich. I do not blame Alec Baldwin when he mentioned something about mail-order brides from the Philippines. I also cannot feign compassion for the women who got hurt by this statement because that’s what some women here do. That is a clear result that stemmed out from watching too many telenovelas.
The sad thing about Filipinos is that no matter how much other people try to tell them that they are deluded about their lives as they are with their candidates, they would still persist with their silly ideas. This is where Noynoy comes in.
Over the past few months, I cannot seem to get myself to understand why people, just like when they are watching soap operas, are in a daze with regard to this whole “Noynoy is our hero” or “Noynoy will be a good president because his parents are good people” crap. How on earth can you tell that he will bring change to this God-forsaken country when he himself is from a political dynasty? IS THAT EVEN CHANGE? People think that he can save the country from turmoil for the sake of his dead parents and that he has an amicable spirit. Like what my friend has told me, indeed, Noynoy is the emotional choice and his way of thinking is like that of Charles I who strongly advocated the Divine Right of Kings. Charles I’s way of thinking I can somehow understand because he lived in the 1600′s but Noynoy’s way of thinking is completely deluded and so are the people who support him.
Every time I ask people on why they vouch for Noynoy, all their answers are fantasy – just like telenovelas. Filipinos are full of dramas and it really angers me to a great extent. What’s even more disturbing is that even the middle and upper class of the society support him too for some reason I cannot and will never understand. I thought it was only the members of the lower classes who were fond of dramas. I do believe that now, it is fair to say that Filipinos are drama freaks, thinking that Noynoy is the right choice.
Let me just remind you people that like all trends, this Noynoy Aquino trend will fade away and you people will oust him when he’s not doing any good just like you ousted other presidents. When that happens, I will just laugh my ass of and say “I told you so.”

Don’t forget that wealthy and educated people in telenovelas are portrayed as corrupt and greedy. In real life, the opposite would be true. The wealthier people would actually tend to have better values because they could afford the education and informational resources that provide these values. The poorer people just follow their friends or anyone like sheep without thinking. These telenovelas and local TV dramas are among the greatest deceivers in mass media, since they show concocted.images of people and portray actions that really shouldn’t work in real life, but they work in the shows (i.e., being dumb wins, the intelligent are losing
)!!
Their excuse is entertainment. But the problem is, what you watch can be ingrained in the psyche. Heck, I’d rather watch a Power Ranger show from Japan, haha.

Telenovelas and Dramas Reply:

It’s almost like the rich people who own the media companies and create the telenovelas don’t want the masses to move up the socio-economic ladder and pose competition to the well-established monopoly the hacienda-owners already hold.
They can’t even seem to see that by advocating upward social mobility through hard work and proper values that lead towards real success, the market expands for whatever it is that the rich are already selling. Very small-minded indeed for them to prefer to keep the masses staying poor.
What’s funny is that the hacienda owners are stuck in an old “zero-sum game” mentality that is related to their traditional ownership in a finite source of wealth: land. Land does not expand, and the hacienda owners, it seems, subconsciously feel that helping the masses achieve wealth (by inculcating the proper values that lead towards success) poses a possible threat that undermines their own status. If the masses become wealthy, as the hacienda-owning elites think, the masses y might become wealthy enough to buy the hacienda-owners off their own land.

Please I’ve been trying to tell that to everyone for I don’t know, the past 12 years. But c’mon it’s a standard formula that works for the gullible D & E. You’re not going to take away the slightest piece of heaven (and megabucks for soap commercials) just to enlighten the “masa”, right?
Sure people would be a lot smarter and educated but is that really a good thing?

IMO, the media companies are already making a killing with formulaic programming, so they have little reason to rethink and vastly improve the quality of their programs. The hope is that at some point they will see a huge differential in payoff that corresponds with an investment in elevating the standards and overall substance. Unless they recognize a massive incremental gain that justifies spending more money that comes with veering away from formula, replacing shallow material with matters of greater significance or benefit, and even applying stricter standards in journalism, we can expect that they will keep the status quo at their end.
The media companies aren’t solely to blame since Pinoys consume their products like tilapia on a feeding frenzy anyway. It’s when the consumers prefer to use their heads enough to prefer not to be treated like your average partying tambay that perhaps we might see some changes. Unless consumption patterns and tastes change, the products will most likely stay the same.
So now, like the chicken and egg, we have the media companies that we feel should come up with programming that doesn’t keep people from getting real, and we have a huge chunk of the Pinoy population that eats up practically anything the bigger media companies currently feed them. Without the latter changing (most especially the latter), it would be harder to expect anything else to. Same goes with the Sincerity, Honesty, Integrity, Transparency that Noynoy supporters keep peddling. Until they acknowledge that these things they only assume Noynoy to champion, his inner circle will keep these supporters believing in fantasy, never mind that he couldn’t even clean up his own backyard. So it keeps going in circles until hopefully, maybe, people start demanding that Noynoy substantiate their assumptions.

Yes, it is a good thing, because the effect of people being less smarter and educated is damaging the country. Also, do you think that the lower echelon or less skilled workers (construction workers, plumbers, cable installers, exterminators, etc) have to be less smart and educated? Smart and educated people are also working in these professions in the U.S. and other countries, and they are treated with more dignity. The Philippines is one of those places wherein construction workers or garbage collectors, and certain other professions, are being (pun not intended) treated like trash. My mom tells my nephews, “if you don’t study hard, you’ll be a garbage collector.” It’s a result of our culture carrying that “class consciousness” of medieval ages, it’s discriminative and dehumanizing.

It’s sad when tv shows that dare to be different often fail. Nevermind if the concept/script is passable enough to earn a compliment. The ol’ formulas rule due to the public’s comfort zone of mediocrity, combined with the networks’ need (or is it greed?) to attract the highest-possible paying advertisers. Put these two factors together, and we’ve got an endless stream of shows that appear different, yet feel the same.

Brilliant article Ms. Justimbaste! I agree that those people who support Noynoy are mostly what was termed before as the “Starstruck Ignoramuses”. Noynoy’s situation fits perfectly in a cheesy telenovela script. Ang tatay ay “Bayani” and the mother just died so after getting “Enlightenment” from “Bro”, he will rise up and lead the masses to rise up against corruption, hunger and all the other usual windmills these Don Quixotes tilt at. Seriously, when my flight attendant friend visited LA and we had a get together, I asked her who she would vote for. She answered Noynoy. I asked her to explain why and she said “I really like Kris”.

If you put in situation that you need to choose in a set of evil characters. Which one will you choose the most evil one or the less evil one.
The Politics in this country was running in dirty way in so many years, come on move on it is ok to look in the past cause you can get a lesson, But staying in the past will not help you to move forward in the better future. Even Noynoy is a son of Aquino Couple. He different and he is capable in carrying the good will of his parent and if his parent did a mistake in they leadership I believe That Noynoy learned his lesson that lesson will make him more prepare to lead this country…

Noynoy, just like Kris, will not live up to his parents’ expectations. Kris was sexually promiscuous, Noynoy is a loser.
Both of them are disgraces to Ninoy and Cory.

I think the writer here wishes to convey that most Noynoy supporters tend to choose their candidate for the wrong reasons. For example, the flight attendant above said, “I will vote Noynoy because I like Kris.” Uh, what?
Call this not an attack, but a criticism. It criticizes the idea that Noynoy, or even the Aquino family, is the only hope of the country. Guys, the only guy worth mentioning from them was Ninoy. The rest of the family is another political dynasty bearing the risk of turning the country into an enlarged Maguindanao. Are they really the only hope? It’s better to expand your horizons and think out of the box. At least out of the “winnability” and “popularity” box. In other words, what’s the platform?
By the way, they’re showing “Boys over Flowers” again. Same old thing over and over again…. yaaawwn… shouldn’t it be “Boys over My Flower”? hehehehe

I dont watch Cinema One Telenovelas. They use the same story structure. Most of their dialogues.
They are shouting at each other. The ending is boringly the same. The writers lack immaginations

Mahal na mahal ko yang sila Ninoy at Cory kaya ayaw kong iboto si Noynoy dahil sisirain lang nyan ang magandang pangalan nila Ninoy at Cory. Ngunit ako’y nagsipag at medyo natututo na rin ako ng ingles. Ang ayaw ko sa mga palabas nating mga tagalog eh katakot-takot na tampuhan at pagdating rin sa huli eh ganun rin naman ang wakas. Ako rin ay nag-aaalala dahilan sa wala masyadong magandang natututunan ang mga kabataan. Puro ligawan at ligawan at selosan na walang katapusan kaya nabubuntis lang mga kabataan dahil puro ganun lang ang nasa isip nila imbis na pag-aaral ang atupagin.
Bakit kasi puro mga bakla ang karamihan na namamahala dyan sa showbiz na puro istoryang pambakla tuloy ang nasusunod, eh marami naman tayong mahusay na mga manunulat pagka tumingin lang sila dyan sa Filipiana section sa library at bookstores. Hindi na kapanipaniwala ang mga pagkakataong pinilit lang sa palabas na ipinatagpo-tagpo.

Porket anak si Noynoy ni Ninoy at ni Cory hindi guarantee yan na magiging katulad niya ang kanyang mga magulang. Very well said, kasi si KRIS mismo, isang anak nina Ninoy at Cory.
Sa totoo nga lang, si Kris daw ang kaiisang anak ni Cory na nagmana sa Charm at Charisma ni Cory, at si Kris lang din mimso ang nagmana sa Eloquence at talino ni Ninoy.

Di lang yun, palpak pa ang career ni Noynoy.
Obvious naman na hindi totoo ang sinasabi ng may rabies na supporters ni Noynoy na ipagpapatuloy niya ang laban ng kanyang mga magulang dahil wala naman siyang kakayahang gawin ito.

First. Telenovelas like all other soaps, bring a certain degree of satisfaction to the one watching, it is a sort of dissociative amnesia wherein they get sucked into this different paradigm wherein the stereotype rags-to-riches character would go on to get his girl and in some convoluted kind of way would be stopped by the antagonists of the story. It taps into an emotional release of some sort which is a human need, it brings out deluded fantasies, and it is all in the comfort of your couch. I think for the most part soaps, dwells much on this human aspect.
Second. I feel disgusted when we try to classify people, please let us not call each other as losers or dimwits or some sort, we may be smarter than other people but this does not give us a certain right to call them detrimental names. Let us be constructive, start with ourselves and then let us influence this so-called losers into thinking the way that we are thinking, that being rational and not emotional whilst choosing their candidate.
Third, Let’s get to Noynoy, as you have all pointed out, Noynoy has been the safest choice for the general population. But if one would ponder on things, what has he done in the 12 years in congress and senate?
NOTHING! As far as I am concerned and I do not proclaim that this is a general truth but I believe, legislative people who have been in their seats for that long and have not done anything beneficial for the country, are either, though not limited to, straight-up stupid or are politicians who have been paid by multinationals just so that they would not make laws and policies that would get in the way of their profit maximization schemes: consumer exploitation.
As for the Aquinos, For some reason, the parents have imba charisma, ive been watching old video captures of how Ninoy Aquino spoke and damn he was rather eloquent and truly good with his words. But as far as i am concerned, He is no hero. He knew he was going to die if he went back to the Philippines. But stupidly he went back, got himself killed and was not able to do what he really wanted to do, which is to serve the people in a sense is beneficial for the whole country, he quit the fight, he bailed out and handed himself to be killed, so much potential lost.
As for the mother, Cory as a person is good, you cant say anything about her personality or whatever. But did she bring any good thing to the country. No. She led the revolution, she became president, then she stopped there. So the people went back home as if nothing happened thus no change was really brought, but martial law was just removed. CARP was implemented but the clause was her land would not be included of some sort, if you would have the chance to watch a documentary on how the Aquinos exploit the workers of Haciend Luisita, i think your notion of the Aquinos/Cojuancos would change. (Imagine being paid 7 bucks for a days work in the field). President-wise, Cory did not bring anything to the table. It was a total blunder.
As for the Daughter. I rest my case.
The notion that good parents bring out good kids, is a fallacy. If Cory had not died, would Noynoy run. Is he even fit for a president? I dont think so, he actually lacks the either the charisma and the eloquence of both his parents. For the love of christ, people please think straight and vote rationally.
Lastly, this is not a case of choosing between good or evil, or choosing the lesser evil but rather this is choosing of who has the best fit for the presidency. A morally good person, as by example – Cory, did not bring much good for the country. I know for a fact that Filipinos love to go for the safest bet, but i am telling you guys that Noynoy is far from being the safest bet. Id would go for Perlas or that young counselor from the Kapatiran party rather than Noynoy. Please watch the re-runs of the presidential debates and see who has stood up and showed himself as a exemplar candidate.
Sabi nga ni Gibo, madali tayong mag salita na ganito gagawin ko kapag naging presidente na ako, pero ang tanong kapag nakaupo na ba magagawa ba yun? Kailangan ng concretong plano.
False hopes and Promises. Magbago tayo, baguhin natin ang ating pag iisip sa pagpili at sana ay maliwanagan tayo kung sino ang wastong iboto.
Dahil kung hindi tayo? SINO?

2. noynoy is pro-poor and anti-elitist because _______
3. if you cannot understand what is hope… please refer to the platform… (duh? what platform?)
5. refer to the social weather survey…. MARAMI KAMI !!!
4. BASTA GUSTO KO SI NOYNOY…. PERIOD!

This is so uncanny. I wrote my take about Pinoy Cinema and how it reflects the rot in Da Pinoy psyche way back (back when I still did not make a habit of writing the date on my articles), and a lot of it is consistent with this piece.

Look for other reasons to vote for Noy other than that. If he is a strong candidate as many think, come up with a better answer. We shouldn’t vote based on who their parents are. If that is going to be the case, then we should just have royalty. That is not fair to either Noy or the parents. Vote for Noynoy because of what he has achieved in his tenure as Congressman and Senator. It is easier to have a comeback at all those against him if your defense is based on his own merit rather than vicarious. Consider this please to vote objectively and using our heads not our hearts. The country has done this for the past decades. We have other candidates: look at their credentials, platforms and achievements. Check if their platforms include what you feel is beneficial to the country. Check if their achievements are consistent with their platforms. Check for signs that they have a good head on their shoulders. The reason why the people in here think pinoys are idiots could be stemming from the notion that their votes do not come from a thinking mind but a weeping heart.

This is the most realistic article I have read. I myself am so amazed as what is the hyped about Noynoy. The only thing that I remember about him in his TV appearances where when he gave updates on his mom’s condition and the pathetic answers on the debate as to “question the budget” and “head of an oversight committee”. What a sad answer for a congressman with NO (as in Zero) bills passed into laws and a senator.
I checked his website for whatever drew people into him, it is his integrity, honesty to fight corruption….

men (IMHO) are supposed to be good cooks. lahat ng mga presidentiables na feature dyan knows how to cook. you know one when you see one. the show should have been his chance to prove something positive… kahit maliit lang na task. if he’s been able to come up with a more complicated dish than Villar’s embutido or Gordon’s grilled fish… the viewers could have been impressed… the pros and the cons alike… e dahil IGNOY nga… naka paano yan makakakuha ng boto… you’re right… the ignoy guy doesn’t have any passion at all.

My impression is”tinamad” or “pwede na toh”. Kakadisappoint lang parang nakikita mo na yun paano nya ipapasa yun responsibility if ever given one. I am not for Gibo but you can really tell he has alternatives based on the cooking thing.
One the other hand, do you where can we petition for more debates? I really want to know their platforms and vision for our country. Tama na yun democracia blah blah…. yun totoong problem and issues na rather than reporting on surveys. TSaka, sana live para hinde cut or edited.
Kung sa simpleng pagluluto lang hindi na siya makapag pakitang gilas paano pa kaya nya maso solve ang mga problema ng bayan. Ang dali lang naman magbasa ng cookbook at mag aral ng isang dish para di naman sya mukhang tanga sa show na yun.

Please I've been trying to tell that to everyone for I don't know, the past 12 years. But c'mon it's a standard formula that works for the gullible D & E. You're not going to take away the slightest piece of heaven (and megabucks for soap commercials) just to enlighten the “masa”, right?
Sure people would be a lot smarter and educated but is that really a good thing?
